5 tips to become a better Cinematographer today
Do you have to use the RED external monitor or can you use a ninja 5
You can use an external monitor but it’s harder to navigate the menus that way
Solid stuff. Really enjoy your work, man. I think the only thing I would have changed in the re-edit is that Spenser reacts a half second or more too soon. His/your eyes shift too fast on the start of the "s" sound of the name. He would more realistically probably have his eyes track on the ending of his name, especially if the "er" was prominent enough. But that's just a nit-picky thing. But love the cinematography and visuals as a whole; very impressive. Ngl when I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was gonna be a video discussing or recreating stuff from Unbreakable by M. Night Shyamalan just by the cloak you were wearing.
Good one
Great exercise! I know we like to go back and focus on how we could have shot things differently. But one thing that goes further is the story and editing. Love getting your thoughts on this.
“unbreakable” vibes
Thanks for being honest and showing the process. Halfway through filming and editing my second short film and have only JUST come up with the ending! I had a vague notion how to end it before I started shooting but now I know exactly how I want it to end I feel so much better about shooting the second half and getting there!
Man, I think you should give yourself more credit! The fact that you acted in this as well is impressive. Credit where credit is due my guy, well done!

This was such an interesting and captivating watch. Kudos for putting your insecurities and mistakes out there to help others. Boss!
Love this!!
First
If you ain’t first you’re last.
since your gel filter darken your image, try to blast more light in your scene to compensate, I'm pretty sure you'll get your magenta skintones.
VERY cool video though.
Perhaps unsurprisingly (since I'm a middle of the road guy when it comes to DoF); I gravitated to shots at T2.8 and T5.6. When I did more cinematography in film school, I actually liked T4 on super 35 because is isolated the subject but still let me appreciate the background. The T8 shot I could definitely see being better if there had been someone or something important in the kitchen or laundry room (it's a matter of composition). The T1 was actually rather offputting though I could see it being valuable if I wanted a scene to feel claustrophobic, confusing, or perhaps surreal. All that said, "cinematic" is still a word I hate to use because it can mean so many things to so many different people and really isn't descriptive in a meaningful way.
Is that an epson rd 1 in your hand??
grain on 4k footage looks so off to me.
Hey Spenser, you mentioned that you used Red Dragon S35. I was wondering how does it compare to Red Komodo and Komodo X? for some reason, a lot of people say it has better dynamic range or more organic image but I don't understand how it can be true if both cameras shoot log and then you choose your pipeline work in post.
The newer sensors are just so clean and accurate. They have less inherent“look” Eventually cameras are going to be like film stocks. Dragon is inherently green and low saturated. But of course you can correct it out. But it doesn’t come out of the box clean like modern cameras
Have the 55 and its great for the price. People are overexagerating with ca and bokeh ,look at the price, you can’t expect it to be as good as a 2000€ one. Annoyed by that ,like comparing the nifty fifty at 130€ with the L model at 1500€ and complaining that it’s not as good.🤦🏻
As several people have commented, the most important thing is calibration! I gather this model can be calibrated using the cable and loading in a calibration 3D LUT. Please could you respond to this comment with how successful you found this (and how accurate the monitor became) or make a separate video showing the calibration process? Thanks in advance!
24mm o 35mm cual elegir ?
You are brilliant
Is it full Frame
You should have compared it with the cine soft instead of the dream ik they have their own cine soft lens
Whats the best variable nd for the nisis?
When you think you are original and creative, the internet shows that someone has thought of it! I am a professional photographer and during the pandemic I switched to video. When I bought the Milvus 50, just as you say! It changed my life, I thought how could I live without this? I wanted all of Milvus but I'm not rich. I bought it specifically for a Canon 5 DSR, which takes advantage of the quality. When I started with video with a lot of pain, I switched it to a BMPCC 6K. I must say that I also bought almost all the Tiffen diffusion filters and during the lockdown I tried them. So when I saw your video it seemed to me that there were too many coincidences and that the collective unconscious floats beyond geography. I pass the Milvus 50 link with Black 1/8. Greetings ! ua-cam.com/video/eX7CwFETsfc/v-deo.html
Sigma Art 40mm f1.4 is a beast in mtf charts & image quality. Almost zero distortion & bright & super sharp, practically zero chroma. Affordable perhaps at £650 or £450 used. Big & heavy but worth it.
The "blur circle" and "bokeh balls" you're referring to when talking about bokeh is optically referred to as the circle of confusion.
Ive heard nothing but bad remarks about older red cameras..hard to get repaired as they do not make parts for them anymore..expensive media, still..unreliable..no, no red cam for me thank you..for an older cam id go with Varicam lt..
Amazing videos, Spenser! You are helping me a lot! I’m always trying to find an answer to the question about our industry and work: do you work as a freelance DP or director with different film productions, or do you have your own?
All of the above
There is no comparison. The new Teradek Bolt 6 LT 750 can transmit (10-Bit 4:4:4/4:2:2 RGB, YCC) UHD 4K: 30/29.97/25/24/23.98 with only 0.01 ms Latency. And currently it's only $91 more than the DJI Transmission Standard TX/RX Combo.
Adjust the stiffness of your knob? The Brits are gonna love this.
Nails hahaha or hehehe
What speed booster were you using?
Did the project die?
What about the EF 35 1.4 mark 1 + tuner?
Could be a good idea
Is this something that a novice focus puller could use and monitor the lidar tracking but regain control if a focus rack was needed? In thinking about trading my nucleus m for one, but I’m not sure it’s the right call for professional jobs
which three lense sizes would you suggest to buy first? i have only RF lenses 85 1.2, 15-35 2.8 and the 28-70 rf 2. They can be problematic for focus breathing but great for one person scenes. Which two for land scape and two or 1 person scenes ?
The Dragon sensor imagery is synonymous to movies that actually were in the cinema theaters for a long time. And during that time, upon release the Dragon sensor was said to be the best cinema sensor in the world (arguably in contention with Arri) Some of the Marvel MCU movies, Fast & Furious movies, a bunch of David Fincher’s films, some of the Lord of the Rings “Hobbit”, and the first season of “Stranger Things” to name a few. The eyes of millions of viewers are already conditioned to accept the Dragon sensor image as cinema. On the other hand (I’m not trying to start a war here, it’s just so noticeable that a shift in image priority from RED occurred sometime post DSMC2 era) a lot of the newer content shot on the Raptor/Komodo seem to have more of the “video-like” look although really sharp. In my experience with the Raptor/Komodo you actually have to make the images look like film in post… but the Dragon Sensor images (and the Epic-MX images) look similar to film straight out the camera. With Davinci you can make anything look like film though. I think this is because back when the engineers at RED were building the specs for Dragon Sensor they actually had prioritized film emulation for Dragon’s image due to a lot of people still skeptical about digital cameras used for cinema. Basically with Dragon RED still wanted a digital version of the real cinema film look. Fast forward in time.. With the Later RED cameras I feel the they no longer wanted to emulate film, they wanted to most resolution/DR possible, they no longer prioritize the “Film” look however as for ARRI I feel all their imagery is as close to film cinema as possible
100% agree! Thank you for your help!
Enjoyed listening to your thoughts, and BIG congrats on finishing the writing! The Synco Mic D2 sounds quite good to my ears for the price, also. I find that my creativity and drive ebbs and flows throughout the year, but I think my relatively more recent discovery is that there's a third axis that really impacts my creative progress, and it only goes one direction--control distraction or become unfocused. For me, at least, there's always this sort of quiet gravity that pulls me toward consuming more than I create, or learning for entertainment rather than to execute a new skill or technique on a specific project. That's an area where I have to do mental & lifestyle "clean up" periodically or I'll fall into a pattern--often without even realizing it--of doing things that don't produce any creative work. Ironically this is a problem I've successfully solved in various seasons of my life (college, early career, etc.) but as new layers get added on (the shake-up of the pandemic, becoming a parent, health issues, etc.) it resurfaces and I have to recalibrate or fall into a rut😅
if you need me to bring gear, you're typically gona pay for it
well done on everything, definitely needs to be a full film if hasn't already. You keep the suspense going.🔥🔥🔥
If you’re worried about auto focus try the airs 3 LiDAR, cheap and works a charm for those scenarios. I was in the same boat.
"You've taken your first step into a much larger world."
Thanks for this, Spenser. 60 year old British person here. In my late twentires I wrote a screenplay that was made into a feature film, released on 350 or so screens in 1995 and absolutely bombed. But I got paid, right? But ever since then I've tried - and failed - to do another. What you say resonates with me and I think it may be one of the reasons why I've never been able to even finish another script. Yesterday I did the first day of shooting on my solo short film project, 'Someone Watching Over Me?' (and the fact that I've started shooting this is, in large part, due to the inspiration I've drawn from watching you and your exploits) and instead of agonising over an empty page I decided to embrace my lack of ability to fill those pages and literally wrote the dialogue for each scene a few seconds before shooting it - I wrote it down really only so I could remember what I'd said so I could repeat it shooting my extra coverage. I'm not the most perceptive of people, but I think part of what you're talking about is not letting process or expectations, or what's better for your impression on others getting in the way of creating stuff that satisfies your own artistic vision (although I really liked Flee - perhaps without entirely understanding it) and that's a tremendously positive thing for you to put out there for your audience, which I guess is mostly people like me - trying to express ourselves through this wonderful medium of moving pictures. So take it where you will - I'm certainly along for the ride! Back on topic, halfway through my shoot day (in which my best friend, who has never touched a cinema camera, got a perfect push-in/focus rack in 2 takes) the Comica wireless shotgun I had ordered arrived and like a dick, which I am, I did the second half using it and I've got to say I am very impressed with it. It's not a 416 for sure, but it sounds pretty good and it removes one more cable for me to trip over!
Glad to hear you didn’t overthink your short film! Sometimes just starting is all you need. I’m so happy I have inspired you and thank you for commenting. It’s these responses that make it all worth it.
Speaking of really cheap video mics with good quality (just FYI): TAKSTAR SGC-598
Absolutely relate to this.
That creative spark does come in waves! I've noticed over the years that certain music does influence me and does fire up the creative spark, like Movie soundtracks from Sicario, Heat, Bladerunner, inception, Tenet, 24, girl with the dragon tattoo ect. I've never written a feature script but have many synopsis and ideas jotted down, I loose interest very quickly. You are an inspiration Spencer, I realy enjoy your lighting recreation and your pocket 4k vs red vids🙏🏻. I worked full time in post production in soho London from 2002 to 2015 and around 2012 started buying Projection Anamorphics and vintage photography lenses... And that's a deep rabbit hole!!! I also bought a used Casio CTK-651 for £25 and for an 11 year old keyboard it sounds soooo cinematic the strings, violin, piano are great. To just loose yourself in long orchestral drone sounds for 2 hrs is quite refreshing, even if some people don't play piano just hold down a few keys and see what happens. Also older street photography (35mm film) is inspiring to me 🙏🏻 and everyone just keep experimenting and exploring, I do advise people to constantly go to film tech shows like nab (USA) and 'BSC expo' (UK) and the 'Media production show' (UK) it's a great ace to see new film and TV tech. Because I went to the BSC show I got an email about Cooke lenses having a small demo of some new lenses to go and play with in London Soho, I've never used Cooke lenses before so it's a first for me to play with these great lenses that are probably attached to some reds or Arri cameras... It's free too. And thank you for bringing that budget mic to our attention 🎥🕊️☕
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm glad you are in a healthier, happier place! 😊
Thanks Shelia! and thank you for your contribution to Flea!
